BLS Classes for Healthcare Providers in Memphis and Facts about Palpitations

Palpitations are quite common among people but for most people are harmless. They can be very unpleasant and may happen when you have over exerted yourself, for example through vigorous exercise, or when you are feeling particularly anxious or stressed. They may also happen when you are doing nothing in particular, like watching TV. A few of the heart conditions may cause palpitations and you should visit a doctor when:

        I.            You have a history of heart problems.
II.            Your palpitations cause you to have symptoms such as sudden dizziness, or feeling short of breath.
III.            The palpitations last a long time, don’t improve or gets worse with time.

It is important for every individual to be able to face cardiac emergencies efficiently which can only happen by going for CPR classes. There are courses for both healthcare as well as non-healthcare providers. In the classes, students are taught the life-saving procedures that comprise chest compressions and rescue breaths and proper application of these techniques can restore the life of a victim involved in a cardiac emergency. Being a resident of the Memphis region in Tennessee, you can sign up for a program at the AHA accredited CPR Memphis. Today, our discussion will center on a BLS certification Memphis program.

Common types of abnormal heart rhythms which causes palpitations include atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter.

Triggers of Palpitations:
A few of the stimulants that can trigger palpitations include:
        I.            Alcohol
      II.            Caffeine
    III.            Recreational drugs
IV.            Certain medicines (both prescription and over-the-counter)
      V.            Tobacco
A few emotional and psychological factors like excitement, stress, anxiety and nervousness, panic attacks can also trigger palpitations.

Ectopic Beats- Palpitations can also be caused by ectopic beats which are early (premature) or extra heartbeats which happen when an impulse usually released from the heart’s own natural pacemaker (the sinus node) causes an ‘extra’ or early heartbeat somewhere else along the heart’s electrical system. This can lead to a short pause before or after the extra beat, giving the sensation of a ‘missed’ beat. Ectopic beats are usually harmless which generally require no treatment unless they occur very often or are troublesome.

Tests- If you are concerned about palpitations, consult a doctor who might suggest an ECG (electrocardiogram) to check your heart rate and rhythm.
If your ECG shows an abnormality, or your symptoms continue to bother you, you may need to have further tests or heart monitoring over a longer time period.

A treatment depends on the underlying cause of the palpitations and the severity of the symptoms. Avoiding the triggers of palpitations and ectopic beats may help. Medicines, such as beta-blockers, may be prescribed which can control the heart rate and rhythm.
Raise your awareness on issues related to the heart by consulting a healthcare provider or by looking up the internet.
