All disease starts from the gut. Your gut health, or gastrointestinal (GI) system is at the centre of your overall well-being. It affects each and every part of the body, including your immune function and mood. A healthy gut will have healthy bacteria and immune cells that will keep infectious bacteria, fungi and viruses at bay. Here are some of the signs to watch out for of unhealthy gut so that you can stay on top of your gut health:
Digestive issues- Digestive
issues, such as constant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), are a common sign of a
poor gut, followed by diarrhea, and more. The other signs include abdominal
pain/bloating, loose stools, heartburn, constipation. If you’ve been suffering
from these symptoms for long, seek medical attention right away since it could
indicate an underlying problem necessitating professional advice before the
situation goes out of hand.
Sleep problems- Your gut
health influences the sleep in a big way, and vice versa. Sleep apnea and other
sleep airway disorders can take a toll on the gut microbiome, which, in turn,
negatively impacts serotonin and melatonin production that interferes with your
sleep. This could cause inflammation and insulin resistance, eventually
resulting in diabetes and heart disease.
Skin rash- Studies have established a
connection between gut health and the health of your skin. As already
mentioned, gut health impacts every organ in the body, including skin. An
unhealthy gut results in acne. Studies have established a relation between
intestinal dysbiosis (an imbalance of gut microbiomes) and atopic dermatitis
(eczema).
Cravings for sugar and carbohydrate- Your intense cravings for carbohydrate and sugar denote bad gut
bacteria. Bad gut bacteria can go out of hand very quickly. The situation
further exacerbates when you have sugar, the bacteria grows further. It turns
into this vicious cycle. The key is to increase good gut bacteria. Not only
will it curb the cravings for the unhealthy stuff, but also help you keep your
weight in a healthy range than if your body comprised bad bacteria.
Your weight-loss efforts go for a toss- An unhealthy gut comes in the way of your efforts to lose weight. Our
gut’s main function is to break down the foods we eat for absorption into
blood. The rest is removed as waste material. This means not all the calories
in the food we consume enter our body and cause weight gain. The gut bacteria
help decompose. However, if your gut has more of the unhealthy bacteria, it
becomes difficult to shed weight. It can be concluded that gut bacteria plays a
huge role in obesity, and solid treatments that can ease the weight losing
process are yet to make their mark. However, we aren’t far from that day.
