We will be
discussing the important food groups today with each group integral to
providing essential nutrients and energy that can support normal growth and
good health. One should choose foods that have a high content of nutrients.
A healthy
diet can keep the heart healthy thus keeping cardiac emergencies at bay. A
victim involved in the middle of a cardiac emergency would require immediate
treatment for survival with the most appropriate treatment being proper
application of the life-saving CPR techniques. The procedures comprise chest
compressions and rescue breaths. Choose an accredited training center for

Basic Life Support Classes- Basic Life Support (BLS) is the CPR
course required for Students in Healthcare and Medical Related Programs. This
class is American Heart Association certified, and satisfies all CPR requirements
for nursing school, medical school, dental school, pharmacy school and all

Basic Life Support for infants, adults, and children.

Important Food Groups:
Fruits- Apples, applesauce, apricots,
bananas, berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries), figs, 100% fruit
juices (unsweetened), grapefruit, grapes, kiwi fruit, mangoes, melons
(cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon), nectarines, oranges, papayas, peaches,
pears, plums, pineapple, raisins, prunes, starfruit, tangerines. Many of these
can be offered as dried fruits as well.
Vegetables:
1. Dark Green Vegetables- bok choy, broccoli, collard greens, kale, spinach.
2. Starchy Vegetables- corn, green peas and potatoes.
3. Other vegetables- artichokes, asparagus, avocado, bean sprouts, beets, brussels sprouts,
cabbage, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, eggplant, green and red peppers,
jicama, mushrooms, okra, onions, snow peas, string beans, tomatoes, vegetable
juices, zucchini.
Grains:
1. Whole Grains- brown
rice, buckwheat, bulgur (cracked wheat), oatmeal, popcorn, whole grain barley,
whole grain cornmeal, whole rye, whole wheat bread, whole wheat crackers, whole
wheat pasta, whole wheat cereal flakes, whole wheat tortillas, wild rice.
2. Others- mostly
made from refined grains; however, some may be made from whole grains: cornbread,
corn tortillas, couscous, crackers, flour tortillas, pasta, pitas, pretzels,
ready-to-eat cereals.
Dairy- Low-fat milk, yogurt, cheese (such
as cheddar, mozzarella, Swiss, parmesan, string cheese, cottage cheese),
pudding, frozen yogurt, and ice milk. Calcium-fortified soymilk (soy beverage)
is also part of the Dairy Group.
Others (the last group comprises of the
following):
1. Meats: lean
cuts of beef, veal, pork, ham, and lamb; reduced-fat deli meats.
2. Poultry:
skinless chicken and turkey, ground chicken and turkey.
3. Fish: salmon,
trout, and herring are rich in omega-3 fatty acids; clams, crab, lobster,
mussels, octopus, oysters, scallops, squid (calamari), canned tuna fish.
4. Beans: cooked
beans (black beans, black-eyed peas, kidney beans, lentils, pinto beans);
refried beans (made without lard); tofu (bean curd made from soy beans).
5. Nuts and seeds:
peanut butter; sunflower seeds, almonds, and hazelnuts are rich in vitamin E.
6. Eggs: chicken
eggs, duck eggs.
