Cholesterol as a Heart Disease Risk Factor and Memphis BLS Classes

Cholesterol is a waxy substance. It’s not inherently “bad.” In fact, your body needs it to build cells. But too much cholesterol can pose a problem. It plays a huge role in ensuring someone’s well-being. Cholesterol comes from two sources with liver being the first one which makes most of it and the remainder in the body comes from foods derived from animals. For example, meat, poultry and full-fat dairy products all contain cholesterol, called dietary cholesterol.

The biggest risk factors of heart disease include high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Heart disease can cause life-threatening cardiac emergencies like a cardiac arrest or heart attack. A victim would require immediate treatment for survival with the most appropriate treatment being proper application of the life-saving CPR techniques. The procedures comprise chest compressions and rescue breaths. Going for a CPR class can equip you in handling cardiac emergencies efficiently in out-of-hospital cases. Always choose a certified training center for acquiring training such as the AHA certified CPR Memphis in Tennessee. There are courses for both healthcare and non-healthcare providers. Significance of Cholesterol:
1.      Cholesterol circulates in the blood. The risk for the health increases with the rise in the amount of cholesterol in the blood. It is important to have your cholesterol tested in order to know your level.

2.      LDL cholesterol, which is bad, and HDL, which is good are the two types of cholesterol. Too much of the bad kind, or not enough of the good kind, increases the risk that cholesterol will slowly build up in the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain.

3.      Cholesterol joining with other substances form a thick, hard deposit on the inside of the arteries. This can narrow the arteries and make them less flexible – a condition known as atherosclerosis. If a blood clot forms and blocks one of these narrowed arteries, a heart attack or stroke can result.

4.      Although high cholesterol is a major risk factor, but it is one of the major controllable risk factors for coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction and stroke at the same time.

Check your cholesterol levels. It’s key to know your numbers. Improve your levels by adopting a healthy lifestyle inclusive of regular physical activity and a healthy diet. Consult your healthcare provider to help control your level.
